2024 Resolving to Set Goals and a book review of Shame the Devil

New year's resolutions are a motherfucker. I make them every single year with the best of intentions, but every single year, they pass me by. As I've gotten older, I've learned to give myself some grace and I just set out to do better next year. This year I'm trying to flip the script and look at every day as a chance to walk the right path. In that spirit, instead of resolutions, this year I set goals in a bunch of different categories. What makes this year different is that I've resolved to track those goals on a weekly basis and regularly check in and hold myself accountable.  It turns out, I'm already being tested. My 21 month old son has gone from having covid to now having croup so needless to say the last week has been a struggle of taking care of him, not sleeping much and trying to have a successful first week of 2024. And while other things have popped up that have made financial goals a bit tougher to achieve, there's definitely something to be sa...

Gratitude and Forks

I've been in a kind of shitty mood today, so I thought it would be a good idea to do some writing. Nothing guided, but something to maybe help me with some perspective. I understand that a good way to do this is through listing things that you're grateful for, so here we go. Also, I'm going to do this in the style of a David Letterman Top 10 List. I present to you, from the home office in Normal Heights, the Top 10 Things I'm Grateful for on a Wednesday Night.... 10. Milk Duds 9. Super Moons 8. Interesting Shadows 7. My 1 year old son 6. Bottle Rockets and the movie Bottle Rocket 5. Spicy Meatballs (s/o Sisters Pizza) 4. My Girl Matzah 3. My Wife Laura 2. Loose fitting T-Shirts And the Number One Thing that I am Grateful for on a Wednesday Night in August..... 1. The Ferrari Trailer Seriously though, even though I'm dealing with some thyroid bullshit and I don't know if it's coming or going right now, I have much to be grateful for.  My other plan was to wri...

Orange is the New Black-Season 1 Review (10 years later)

Orange is the new black is the first Netflix original show that I've watched. So let me start out by stating that I think the format is really liberating for series creators. Not being locked into standard network or even cable timeslot restrictions that dictate your run time helps keep episodes tight. One of the best things about Orange was that none of the episodes felt too long or too short, they were all just right. For the uninitiated the show is centered around Piper Hampton a 20 something Wasp that is engaged to a 30-something struggling writer.  Nothing like logging on to blogger and finding a 10 year old review for a show that you didn't really like in the first place. I couldn't even tell you all that much about OITNB 10 years out from my watch other than it was one of Netflix's first big shows and I thought everything in it wrapped up too conveniently. When I spoke with friends and colleagues about it that had seen the show, they likened it to a Korean d...
